Australia's Best Cars: Photography / Function
The AAA's annual Australia's Best Cars award has become the definitive guide to new cars. The AAA is the peak body for seven million motorists, representing all state-based motoring clubs.
Judges from each of the motoring clubs rate more than 300 cars progressively each year. Finalists gather at the Australian Automotive Research Centre at Anglesea for a week's evaluation.
Awards, in 16 divisions, are presented at a major media call at year's end.
Assignment:
TPG provided photographic and video coverage of the AARC judging, and produced the prize-giving ceremony for the host club, the NRMA. It produced pictures for an ABC magazine, and cut video for AAA member websites.
1. AARC
Precise organisation was necessary to photograph and video in five days without interfering with the intense judging process. TPG provided two photographers, a video crew and a producer. An AAA detailing team ensured the cars were pristine.
Major components were a 48 vehicle group shot - set up and shot in two hours - and a magazine cover shot.
2. Function
The Big Top, Luna Park, Sydney, was chosen for its proximity to media and for the ability to properly display all winning vehicles.
Outcome
Good images and video. Function overkill for intended purpose.
